Starting a new fitness routine is exciting. You’ve made the decision to move more, feel stronger, and show up for yourself. That part is done. Now comes a question that trips up a lot of people before they even walk through the door: should I buy a class pass or sign up for a monthly gym membership?
Table of Contents
ToggleIt sounds like a simple pricing question. But it’s really a question about how you want to train, what kind of support you need, and what’s going to keep you consistent when life gets busy. The answer looks different for everyone.
Some people thrive with flexibility. They want to drop in when they can, try different classes, and not feel locked into anything. Others do better with structure. A monthly commitment creates accountability, builds routine, and makes fitness feel less optional.
Neither approach is wrong. But understanding the real differences between them, beyond just the cost, helps you make a choice that actually sticks. We’ve worked with hundreds of members here in Half Moon Bay and we see both paths play out every week. Here’s what we’ve learned.
First, Let’s Talk Numbers
At Highway 1 Fitness, we keep our pricing straightforward. Here’s what each path actually costs you per class:
Drop-In Class Passes
• 1 class: $25 per class
• 5-class pass: $110 ($22/class)
• 10-class pass: $210 ($21/class)
• 15-class pass: $290 ($19.33/class)
Class passes are valid for 6 months (except the single class, which expires in 1 month). They’re flexible by design.
Discounted Class Passes
• 1 class: $18 (1-month expiration)
• 5-class pass: $100 ($20/class)
• 10-class pass: $180 ($18/class)
• 15-class pass: $250 ($16.66/class)
Discounted passes are available for seniors 65+, active military and first responders, teachers, Stanford Healthy Steps and HMB high school students with a valid ID and parental signatures. These must be purchased at the studio front desk. They are not available online.
Monthly Memberships (No Contract)
• BEACH Pass: $185/month, up to 14 classes ($13.21/class)
• WAVE Pass: $225/month, up to 21 classes ($10.71/class)
• BREEZE Pass: $265/month, unlimited classes ($8.83/class)
No contracts. No long-term lock-ins. You stay because you want to, not because you have to.
These memberships cannot be shared, suspended, extended or transferred.

In-Studio Class Passes: The Freedom Option
A drop-in class pass gives you access on your terms. You buy a set number of classes, use them when you want, and there’s no recurring charge waiting for you at the end of the month. For the right person, that freedom is exactly what they need.
Class passes work best for people who are just getting started. Coming in for the first time can feel like a big step. A pass lets you explore different class formats, get to know the instructors, and build confidence without any pressure. You’re investing in the experience without over committing to a schedule you’re not sure about yet.
They’re also a strong fit for people with genuinely unpredictable schedules. Traveling frequently for work, managing young kids, or going through a busier-than-usual season at the office are all real reasons why a flexible pass makes more sense than a monthly plan.
Pros
• No recurring monthly charge
• Full schedule flexibility with no commitment pressure
• Ideal for trying new class formats and instructors
• Great for people with irregular schedules
Discounted rates available for seniors 65+, military, first responders, teachers, Stanford Healthy Steps, and HMB high school students with ID and parental signature.
Cons
• Higher cost per class compared to a membership
• No built-in incentive to show up consistently
• Passes cannot be shared, suspended, or extended
• Less sense of routine and community over time
The honest reality is that flexibility can work against you. When there’s no recurring commitment, it’s easy to push a class to tomorrow, then to next week, then to never. A pass is only as good as your follow-through. If you’re highly self-motivated, that’s no problem. But if you need a little structure to keep going, a pass alone may not give you enough.
Discounted Class Passes: Built for Our Community
We believe fitness should be accessible to everyone. That’s why we offer reduced-rate class passes for members of our community who qualify.

They are not available online, and like all class passes, they cannot be shared, suspended, or extended.

Monthly Memberships: The Commitment Option
A monthly membership is a different kind of choice. It’s not just about saving money per class. It’s about deciding that fitness is a regular part of your life, not something you squeeze in when the timing is right.
When you have a membership, showing up feels different. You’ve already invested. The class is already paid for. That psychological shift is real and it matters. Members who commit to a monthly plan attend more often. They build stronger routines. They connect more with the community around them. And they get better results because of it.
Our membership structure is built around flexibility. Three tiers to match how often you realistically plan to train. Your membership can be upgraded or downgraded to suit your current needs.
Pros
• No contracts. Cancel or pause whenever you need to
• Three membership tiers to match your actual training frequency
• Greater value the more you attend
• Creates real accountability. You’ve invested. You show up.
• Builds routine and community, the two biggest drivers of long-term results
Cons
• Monthly charge continues until you cancel
• Less cost-effective if you attend fewer than 9 classes per month
• Passes cannot be shared, suspended, extended or transferred
Routine is the foundation of real fitness progress. Motivation gets you started. Routine keeps you going. A membership creates the structure that makes showing up feel automatic rather than optional. That consistency is what separates people who see results from people who stay stuck in the cycle of starting over.
So, Which One Should You Choose?
Here’s the simple version. If you’re brand new, curious, or navigating a busy and unpredictable schedule, start with a class pass. Get comfortable. Find the classes you love. Meet the instructors. Let this place become familiar.
Once you’re coming in regularly and looking forward to it, signing up for monthly passes is a logical next step. Finally, going for Highway 1 Fitness membership is the next step. It costs less per class, creates stronger accountability, and builds the community connection that makes fitness genuinely enjoyable rather than just a chore.
Here’s the path we recommend for new members:
• Start with the 4-Week New Client Special to try unlimited classes, or begin with a single Drop-In Class Pass for maximum flexibility.
• Once you’re attending consistently, move to the monthly passes
• When you can’t imagine a week without multiple classes, go for membership
There’s no wrong answer here. The best option is the one you’ll actually use.
Want a More Personalized Path? Consider Personal Training
If you want faster progress and a plan built specifically around your goals, our Personal Training sessions are available alongside any class pass or membership. Working one-on-one with one of our coaches gives you personalized programming, direct feedback, and the kind of focused attention that group classes simply can’t replicate.
Many of our most committed members combine personal training with group classes. The two complement each other well. You get the energy and community of a group, and the precision and accountability of working with a coach.
